WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

Beyond

Positive Thinking

Just ‘thinking positively’ isn’t going to solve the climate crisis, stop wars, restore political trust or eliminate social injustice.

But how we react matters, both for our own well-being and the impact we can have in creating a world which works for all of us.

Discover simple brain-based tools and techniques which allow you to see, experience and react to the world differently.

OUR BRAINs

OUR BRAINs

Our biological brains are responsible for everything we think, feel, perceive, say, create, choose to do, imagine, invent or believe. It is our brains that will determine whether we are worn down by the world or discover our creativity, energy and imagination to help envision and create a better future for all of us.

This does not mean that we just need to “think positively” and all problems in the world will be solved. But it does mean that we need to rediscover and embrace our sense of agency: the belief that our actions matter. Otherwise, there’s not much point in getting out of bed in the morning.

Advances in neuroimaging techniques have meant that we have learnt more about the brain in the last 30 years or so than in the rest of human history put together. What is revealed is an astonishing natural biological organ which is far from a passive receiver of objective reality. Rather, our brains develop rich and dynamic models of the world and our place within it. These models generate powerful predictions, expectations and narratives, which then act as the (self-imposed) parameters and drivers of our behavior, reactions and choices.

Individually and collectively, once we understand how our models work, we can then begin to ‘hack into’ them, changing the way we see the world and our place within it. In turn, this opens up new opportunities to respond to the challenges in the world in more empowering ways and to be in the state of mind where we can maximise our impact.

Ultimately, how we choose to harness the power of our brains—both individually and collectively — will play the central role in shaping our future. And when we take a look around, it’s clear that humanity needs some new ideas right now!

WHAT OTHERS SAY

The words we most often hear are ‘surprising’ and ‘practical’. Here are just a few pieces of other feedback we have got.

Brain Tools and techniques

While our brains are astonishingly complex, our tools and techniques are simple. They allow you to change the way you think by activating different neural circuitry and modes, tapping into and reconfiguring resources that were always there.

No ‘gadgets, apps, substances, super-natural powers or magical thinking’ are required; just a curiosity to explore how your natural, biological brain works. Nothing could be more important right now as we seek to understand the profound implications of Artificial Intelligence which are coming our way.

It’s not that one mode of thinking is superior to another. Rather, it is about having the agility to be able to switch between different approaches according to the task at hand.

After all, if you only have a hammer, every problem starts to look like a nail. In a rapidly changing world, wouldn’t you rather have the versatility of a Swiss army knife?
